Taking every opportunity available, and making them when they aren’t, Tony Stewart has announced his bid for the 2011
NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship loudly with his third win of the Chase in Sunday’s Tums Fast Relief 500 from Martinsville Speedway.
With three laps to go Tony Stewart pounced on race leader Jimmie Johnson and out powered him to the checkered flag to claim his third victory out of the last seven races landing him squarely second in points, breathing down Carl Edward’s neck.
Jimmie Johnson, seeking a win desperately, had to settle for second. He is still far from competitive with three races left on the roster for his effort to win his sixth NASCAR Sprint Cup in a row. Jeff Gordon came home third, a decent
showing but not enough to put him in contention to realize his bid for a fifth Cup. Chasers Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin came in fourth and fifth. Non-Chaser Jeff Burton took home fifth. Dale Earnhardt Jr. placed sixth while non-Chaser Martin Truex Jr. came in seventh. Points leader Carl Edwards salvaged a ninth place finish. And Ryan Newman, teammate of race winner Tony Stewart, rounded out the Top 10.
Carl Edwards maintains the points lead leaving the short track of Martinsville by a narrow eight points to second place Tony Stewart who jumped two positions. Kevin Harvick, also moving
up two spots, occupies third and is still 21 points behind the leader. Brad Keselowski slid back one position to fourth. Matt Kenseth lost three spots landing in fifth. Jimmie Johnson picked up one position to sixth while Kyle Busch lost ground by one and settled in seventh. Kurt Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin, and Ryan Newman all remained in their same spots occupying eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth respectively.
The Chase moves on to Texas Motor Speedway for the running of the AAA Texas 500 on Sunday, November 6th. Coverage begins at 3pm EST on ESPN. With this being the seventh of ten Chase races and the way the points have been shifting madly all season, this is a race you will not want to miss.
