Pure Michigan 400 Race Recap by Chief 187 Showing muscle and a won’t lose spirit, Kyle Busch took the checkered flag on Sunday for the Pure Michigan 400 run at the Michigan International Speedway.

This win, his fourth of the season, puts Kyle Busch solidly in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, the first this season to lock in his spot.

Kyle Busch muscled his car ahead of five time defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson who was looking for a win today but was denied by the Joe Gibbs driver of the #18 car.

The day ended during a Green-White-Checkered with Kyle Busch edging Jimmie Johnson for the win by a .568 second margin.

Brad Keselowski, still not running at one hundred percent after a terrible wreck in Atlanta left him with a broken ankle a couple of weeks ago, turned in another fantastic run taking third. Rick Hendrick driver Mark Martin posted his second Top 5 of the season by finishing fourth. Ryan Newman came in fifth. Jeff Gordon, who ran well all day, had to settle for sixth. Kasey Kahne turned in a decent finish at seventh. Clint Bowyer took eighth, Tony Stewart claimed ninth and Matt Kenseth sewed up tenth.

This week the NASCAR Sprint Cup points finds Kyle Busch alone at the top ahead of second place Jimmie Johnson who picked up one spot from last week. Kevin Harvick also moved up one position to third. Carl Edwards who had been atop the points standing for much of the 2011 season dropped two spots to fourth. Matt Kenseth’s run allowed him to stay put in fifth. Both Jeff Gordon and Ryan Newman each moved up one spot to occupy sixth and seventh respectively. Kurt Busch, who cut a tire during Sunday’s race, dropped two positions to eighth while both Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart stayed in their respective spots of ninth and tenth. There will, of course, be the addition of two wild cards in the Chase who have yet to be determined.

The action leaves Michigan and returns to the south when the drivers take the short track at Bristol next week. ABC will carry the anticipated race under the lights at one of the series’ best show. Tune in at 7:30pm EST on Saturday, August 27th for all of the flag to flag coverage.
